What is the joint replacement surgery?
In the joint replacement surgery, the damaged bone at the joint articulation of the patient is removed and replaced with the metal and the polyethylene for pain-free daily life.
In our institution, the majority of our patients need the hip and knee replacement surgeries. However, we also offer artificial joints for shoulders, elbows, ankles, fingers, and wrists. For more details, please consult with your surgeon.
Common diseases for Japanese patients are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteonecrosis. These diseases may attack the patient either in the hip or the knee. There are not many patients who suffer both the hip and the knee simultaneously from the same disease.
Osteotomy is another option to treat joint diseases; this procedure rectifies the balance at the joint by cutting some portion of the bone. The benefit of this procedure is to give the patient little pain right after the surgery. However, it requires the patient to periodically contact his surgeon and check if any malfunction or loosening occurs to make the effect of the surgery last as long as possible.

Our institution is one of the few medical establishments in Japan where MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) is performed. MIS requires a very small incision to perform the surgery. The benefit of this procedure is less skin damage (7-8cm) and less muscle damage. The patient of MIS surgery is able to have meals and start walking exercise on the very day of surgery.
